Using Technology to Enhance Math and Sciences Lessons

Technology in the classroom has become an essential tool for learning and understanding. According to Pierce and Ball (2009), students’ attitudes towards math improve when they engage in technology in the classroom. They also tend to have a deeper understanding of the subject. Students can explore mathematical concepts by using various tools, like calculators or online manipulation tools. However, incorporating the appropriate technology into math classes is a matter of careful thought and an understanding of how it functions.

One of the key advantages of incorporating technology into maths lessons is that teachers can find more innovative ways to teach the subject. This is due to the fact that some of the newer digital tools are designed to exploit students’ modeling and visual power. Software programs, for instance let students create 3D geometrical models of objects such as cubicles and cones in a manner that helps students understand the shapes and properties.

The most efficient technology tools also assist students to free their working memory so they can focus on formulating and building models. They also help in the creation of public records of thinking that are able to be edited, transportable and shareable among colleagues and teachers. This approach aims at bridging the gap between informal knowledge of students and formal mathematical structures and science-related phenomena.
